Why Your Google Ads Stop Spending in the Afternoon

Why Your Google Ads Stop Spending in the Afternoon

You check your Google Ads account at 2:00 PM and see the same frustrating message: “Limited by budget.”

Your ads stopped showing hours ago. You spent $80 by 10:00 AM, got three clicks, and only one of them called. The rest were DIYers looking for a YouTube video or someone shopping for a $12 part on Amazon.

This happens to appliance repair companies every day. Google is happy to spend your money as fast as possible, but most of that spend goes to the wrong people. You end up paying for clicks from searchers who will never book a service call.

The good news is that this problem is fixable. The issue is not your budget. The issue is how your campaigns are set up. Once you understand why your ads stop spending early, you can stretch that same budget across the entire day and get better leads in the process.

What “Limited by Budget” Really Means for Your Appliance Repair Business

Google Ads dashboard showing the limited by budget status warning message.

When Google shows you the “Limited by budget” status, it means your daily budget ran out and your ads are no longer showing for the rest of the day.

Google calculates your daily budget by dividing your monthly budget by 30.4. So if you set a $1,500 monthly budget, Google tries to spend about $50 per day. But here is the catch: Google can spend up to twice your daily budget on any given day if it thinks the traffic is valuable.

That sounds reasonable until you realize that Google has no idea whether a click is valuable to your business. Google just knows someone searched for something related to your keywords. It does not know if that person is a homeowner with a broken refrigerator who needs help today, or a college kid researching how to replace a door gasket himself.

Most appliance repair campaigns waste 40 to 60 percent of their budget on unqualified clicks. You are not underfunded. You are overpaying for the wrong traffic.

4 Reasons Your Google Ads Stop Spending in the Afternoon Before You Get Enough Calls

You’re Paying for DIY Searchers and Parts Hunters

This is the biggest budget killer in the appliance repair industry, and most business owners have no idea it is happening.

If you bid on a keyword like “refrigerator repair,” Google will show your ad to anyone who searches for anything related to refrigerators. That includes people searching for:

  • “Refrigerator repair manual”
  • “Whirlpool ice maker parts”
  • “How to fix a leaking fridge”
  • “GE refrigerator schematic”
  • “Refrigerator repair classes near me”

None of these searchers want to hire you. They want free information, a $15 part, or a training course. But Google charges you $8 to $15 per click anyway.

I have audited hundreds of appliance repair Google Ads accounts. Almost every single one was bleeding money on DIY and parts-related searches. One client in Phoenix was spending $400 per week on clicks from people searching for appliance repair courses and installation manuals. Zero service calls came from those clicks.

If you do not have a strong negative keyword list, you are paying for searchers who will never convert.

Broad Match Keywords Are Bleeding Your Budget

Google defaults to broad match for most keywords. Broad match means Google can show your ad for any search query it thinks is loosely related to your keyword.

If you bid on “washer repair,” broad match allows Google to show your ad for:

  • “Washer and dryer set for sale”
  • “Pressure washer repair”
  • “Car wash near me”
  • “Window washer service”

These clicks cost you money and deliver zero value.

Broad match works well for large e-commerce brands with huge budgets and advanced conversion tracking. It does not work for local service businesses with tight budgets and phone-based conversions.

Most appliance repair owners should be using phrase match or exact match for the majority of their campaigns. Phrase match gives you some flexibility while keeping your ads focused on real service intent. Exact match is even tighter and works well for high-intent keywords like “emergency refrigerator repair near me.”

Your Ads Run 24/7 Even Though You Don’t

Google runs your ads around the clock unless you tell it otherwise. If you do not offer 24-hour emergency service, there is no reason to pay for clicks at 2:00 AM.

Most appliance repair companies take calls from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and maybe half a day on Saturday. But your Google Ads account is still running at 11:00 PM on a Tuesday night, burning through your budget while you sleep.

Ad scheduling, also called dayparting, lets you control exactly when your ads show. You can pause your ads during off hours and focus your budget on the times when you actually answer the phone and book jobs.

Some owners worry that pausing ads at night means losing emergency calls. That is a fair concern if you run a 24-hour operation. But if you do not, every after-hours click is wasted money. The searcher will either call a competitor who does answer, or they will forget about the problem by morning.

Ad scheduling also helps with response time. If someone clicks your ad at 8:00 AM and you call them back in five minutes, your booking rate is much higher than if they clicked at 9:00 PM and you call them back the next day.

Your Location Targeting is Too Wide

Google lets you set a radius around your business or target specific cities and zip codes. A lot of appliance repair owners set their radius too wide because they think more coverage means more leads.

The problem is that service radius and profitable service radius are not the same thing.

If you set a 30-mile radius but your technicians refuse to drive more than 15 miles, you are paying for clicks from people you will never serve. Even if they call, you will either turn them down or charge a trip fee that kills the conversion.

We’ve worked with a client who was targeting a 40-mile radius. His techs complained constantly about long drives and low-profit jobs. When we tightened the radius to 18 miles and focused on his core zip codes, his cost per lead dropped by 35 percent and his booking rate went up because the jobs were closer and easier to schedule.

Tighter targeting also improves your Quality Score in Google Ads. When your ads show to people in your actual service area, your click-through rate goes up and your cost per click goes down. Google rewards relevance.

How to Make Your Google Ads Budget Last All Day

Build a Negative Keyword List for Appliance Repair

A negative keyword list tells Google which searches you do not want to show up for. This is the fastest way to stop wasting money.

Start with these negative keywords for appliance repair:

  • DIY
  • How to
  • Manual
  • Parts
  • Schematic
  • Diagram
  • Course
  • Training
  • School
  • Classes
  • Install
  • Installation
  • Warranty
  • Rental
  • Rent
  • Lease
  • Used
  • For sale
  • Jobs
  • Careers
  • Salary

Add these to your campaigns as negative keywords. Use phrase match or exact match negatives depending on how aggressive you want to be.

Then check your search terms report every week. The search terms report shows you exactly what people typed into Google before they clicked your ad. You will find new negative keywords every single week.

Look for patterns. If you see a lot of clicks from people searching for specific part numbers, add “part number” as a negative keyword. If you keep getting clicks for “LG refrigerator manual PDF,” add “PDF” and “manual” as negatives.

This is ongoing work. Your negative keyword list should grow every month. The longer you run your campaigns, the cleaner your traffic becomes.

Switch to Phrase Match and Exact Match

Phrase match and exact match give you much more control than broad match.

Phrase match means your keyword has to appear in the search query in the same order, but other words can come before or after it. If your phrase match keyword is “refrigerator repair,” your ad can show for “emergency refrigerator repair near me” or “Samsung refrigerator repair cost,” but it will not show for “repair my pressure washer” or “car refrigerator.”

An exact match is even stricter. Your ad only shows when someone types your exact keyword or a very close variation. If your exact match keyword is [appliance repair near me], your ad will show for that phrase and almost nothing else.

Start by converting your top-performing broad match keywords to phrase match. Run them for two weeks and watch your cost per lead. In most cases, phrase match will lower your cost per click and improve your lead quality.

For high-intent keywords like “dishwasher repair near me” or “emergency oven repair,” use exact match. These keywords already have strong buying intent. You do not need Google to guess what else might be relevant.

Set Up Ad Scheduling Based on When You Actually Answer the Phone

schedule your ad

Go into your Google Ads account and set up an ad schedule that matches your business hours.

If you are open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, your ads should only run during those hours. Turn them off at night and on Sundays unless you have someone answering calls.

You can also use bid adjustments to get more advanced. For example, if you know that calls between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM convert at a higher rate, you can increase your bids by 20 percent during that window. If late afternoon calls tend to be lower quality, you can decrease your bids by 10 percent from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Ad scheduling does two things. It stretches your budget across the hours that matter, and it improves your speed to lead. When someone clicks your ad and calls, you are ready to answer. That makes a huge difference in booking rates.

Tighten Your Service Radius

Look at your last 50 booked jobs. How far did your technicians drive for each one? What zip codes show up the most?

Use that data to set a realistic service radius in Google Ads. If 80 percent of your jobs come from within 12 miles of your shop, set your radius to 15 miles and focus your budget there.

You can also use location bid adjustments. If certain zip codes consistently deliver high-value jobs, increase your bids by 15 to 25 percent in those areas. If other zip codes only generate tire kickers and price shoppers, lower your bids or exclude them entirely.

Google allows up to 1,000 location targets per campaign. You do not need to target your entire metro area. Target the neighborhoods where you actually make money.

Stop Guessing with Your Marketing Budget

Most appliance repair business owners do not have time to manage Google Ads properly. You are handling service calls, managing technicians, ordering parts, and resolving customer issues. Logging into Google Ads every week to check search terms and adjust bids is not realistic.

That is why your campaigns waste money. It is not your fault. You are just trying to run a business.

A company built our website about two years ago which I thought was a good job. However, it didn't generate any traffic or conversion. Thus, I founnd Mike Carson at Service Alliance Group whom I contacted and he offered a free website analysis on my website. He went into details about my website layouts, contents, rankings, and what makes a website standout. After listening to him closely, I decided to take him up on his offer and he did a wonderful job on building my website. Now, my website is ranking very well accross the web such as Google serach engine, Bing places, and Facebook just to name a few. Now, my business phone rings more than I expected and we are extremely satisfied with the work Appliance Marketing Pros has done for us. They did not only built our website but now his company handles our SEO. I can't emphasized how happy we are to find a company that delivers on its promises.
