How to Get Google Verified for Local Services Ads

How to Get Google Guaranteed in 2026

If you have been trying to get Google Guaranteed, stop. That badge does not exist anymore. Google retired it on October 20, 2025, along with Google Screened, and replaced both with a single blue Google Verified checkmark.

I am the owner of Appliance Marketing Pros. We take appliance repair and HVAC companies through Local Services Ads verification, and then we manage the accounts afterward. I rewrote this page because the version that used to sit here was built around a badge Google had already killed, and half the advice still floating around online has the same problem. It tells you to put every technician through a background check. It tells you to look for a green checkmark. Both are wrong, and both will waste your week.

Here is what the badge actually is now, the five checks Google runs before it will show your profile, the paperwork mistakes that stall applications, what it costs once you are approved, and what pulls the badge back off your listing after you have earned it.

What Google Verified Is and What It Replaced

Google Verified is the blue checkmark that appears on Local Services Ads listings, the pay-per-lead ads that sit at the very top of Google search results. Above the regular Google Ads. Above the map pack. Above everything organic.

The checkmark is not a separate product you can buy. It only exists inside Local Services Ads. There is no application for the badge by itself, no fee for the badge by itself, and no way to display it on your truck or your website as a standalone credential you purchased. You get verified, you run Local Services Ads, and the badge shows on the listing.

What changed on October 20, 2025

Before Now
Google Guaranteed, green checkmark, home services trades Google Verified, blue checkmark
Google Screened, used in professional service categories Google Verified, blue checkmark
Two badges, two sets of language, constant customer confusion One badge across all Local Services Ads categories

If your website, your yard signs, your truck wrap, your invoices, or your review request texts still say “Google Guaranteed,” they are now pointing at something no homeowner has ever seen on a search result. Change the words and change the graphic. The trust behind it did not change. The name and the color did.

What the checkmark actually certifies

The badge tells a homeowner four specific things, and it is worth knowing exactly which four, because this is the language you should be using in your own marketing:

  • Google confirmed your business holds a current trade license where your state or city requires one
  • Google confirmed you carry current general liability insurance
  • Google ran a criminal background check on the business owner through a third-party screening firm
  • You are paying per lead, not per click, so the listing has skin in the game

What it does not certify

It says nothing about the quality of your repairs, your pricing, your parts sourcing, or your warranty. It is a screening credential, not a workmanship rating. Anyone who tells an owner the badge is a stamp of approval on their technical work is overselling it, and homeowners figure that out fast.

The Five Checks You Have to Pass to Get Google Verified

Google runs five checks. Four apply to every appliance repair and HVAC shop. The fifth only fires in certain categories. Each one below uses the same three questions: what Google is actually checking, what you submit, and what gets you rejected.

1. Business Identity and Google Business Profile Match

What Google is actually checking: That your business name, address, phone number, and hours are real, consistent, and identical to what is already published on your Google Business Profile.

What you submit: Your legal business name, your physical address, your main phone number, your hours, and the link to your Google Business Profile. Google connects the two accounts.

What gets you rejected: Any mismatch at all between the two profiles. “Smith Appliance Repair LLC” on the license and “Smith Appliance Repair” on the Business Profile is enough to stall an application. So is an old shop address, a phone number you changed last spring, or hours you updated on one profile and not the other. Redirecting your website URL will also flag you, because Local Services Ads policy requires the real domain and not a forward.

Fix the Business Profile before you start the application, not during it. If your Business Profile needs work in general, our guide to Google Business Profile for appliance repair covers what to clean up.

2. General Liability Insurance

What Google is actually checking: That you carry current, unexpired general liability coverage, and that the business address on the policy matches the address on your Local Services Ads profile exactly.

What you submit: A certificate of insurance from your agent, uploaded as a PDF or an image. Google publishes the coverage minimum for your category inside the application. Most appliance repair and HVAC shops already carry $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate because that is what commercial landlords, property managers, and warranty companies ask for, so this is rarely the piece that trips owners up.

What gets you rejected: The address on the certificate. This is the single most common stall we see. The certificate says your accountant’s office, or the address you had four years ago, or your home address instead of the shop. Google rejects it, the error message is vague, and the owner spends two weeks guessing.

Pull the certificate before you upload anything and compare the address to your profile character for character. If it is off, call your agent and have it reissued first. A reissue takes a day. Guessing at a rejection takes two weeks.

3. State and Local Trade Licenses

What Google is actually checking: That every license your trade and state require is current and unexpired, and that the address on the license matches your profile.

What you submit: License numbers and copies of the license documents for the categories you want to advertise in.

What gets you rejected: Expired licenses the owner believed were current, and the same address mismatch problem as the insurance certificate.

This is where HVAC and appliance repair split. Appliance repair is lightly licensed in most states, and some shops need nothing beyond a general business license. HVAC contractors usually carry a state mechanical or contractor license plus EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling, and in many states a separate registration for each county or municipality. If you run both sides of the house, verify every one of them with your state board before you submit. Google will not tell you which one failed.

4. Owner Background Check

What Google is actually checking: A criminal background check on the business owner. In North America this is run by a third-party screening firm, either Evident or Pinkerton Consulting and Investigations.

What you submit: Identity information for the owner through the screening firm’s portal, not through Google. You get an email with a link and you complete it there.

What gets you rejected: Not finishing it. Once the check starts, you have a 90-day window to complete it. Owners open the email, set it aside for a busy season, and the window closes.

Here is the part almost every outdated blog post gets wrong, including the one that used to live on this page: your technicians do not need background checks. Only the business owner does. If you have been putting off Local Services Ads because you have six techs, seasonal help, or subcontractors and you assumed you had to screen all of them, that assumption has been costing you leads for years.

The other thing to know now, before you forget it: this check is annual, not one and done. More on that below, because it is the number one reason verified accounts quietly go dark.

5. Advanced Verification

What Google is actually checking: In certain regulated categories, Google runs a deeper review that can include a live video interview.

What you submit: Additional documentation, plus your own time on a video call.

What gets you rejected: Sending someone else. Your office manager cannot sit for it. Your marketing agency cannot sit for it. The business owner has to be on the call personally, with the documents open on screen. If Advanced Verification is triggered, block an hour on your own calendar and treat it like a job you cannot reschedule.

The Google Verified Document Checklist

Gather all of this before you open the application. Owners who collect the paperwork first get through in days. Owners who collect it as Google asks for it get through in weeks.

Requirement What it costs you How long it takes How often
Certificate of insurance Nothing if your policy is active, one phone call if the address needs reissuing Same day to 2 business days from your agent Every time the policy renews
Trade and business licenses Your normal state and municipal renewal fees Immediate if current, weeks if expired Per your state’s renewal cycle
Owner background check No charge from Google Typically a few days to about 2 weeks to process Annually
Business Profile alignment Nothing but attention to detail Under an hour if you do it in one sitting Any time your name, address, phone, or hours change
Advanced Verification, if triggered One hour of the owner’s time Scheduled by Google Rare

Timeline. Verification commonly runs from a few days to about two weeks, depending on how fast you submit clean documents and how backed up Google’s review queue is. Google does not publish a guaranteed turnaround. If an agency or a consultant tells you they can get you verified by a specific date, they are guessing. Nobody controls that queue, including us.

What Google Verified Costs Once You Are Approved

The badge itself is free. The leads are not.

Local Services Ads bill per lead, not per click. You are charged when someone calls, messages, or books through the listing. Somebody who sees your profile, reads your reviews, and scrolls past costs you nothing. That is the whole reason the channel is worth the paperwork. The same homeowner clicking your regular Google Ad to price a $12 door switch still costs you $8 to $15 whether or not they ever call.

You set a weekly budget, not a daily one. Google spends against it and pauses your listing when you hit the cap.

In a mid-size metro, appliance repair leads generally run $30 to $45 and HVAC leads run $55 to $90, with HVAC swinging hard by season. Major metros run higher on both. We break the full cost grid down by market size, plus the cost-per-booked-job math that actually decides whether the channel pays, in our guide to Google Local Services Ads.

The two bad lead types that no longer earn you a credit

This is the part of the current system that punishes a sloppy profile, and it is worth understanding before you finish your application rather than after your first invoice.

Google no longer issues credits for leads flagged as job type not serviced or geo not serviced. If a homeowner two counties outside your real coverage area calls, you pay for it. If someone calls about a commercial walk-in cooler and you only do residential, you pay for it.

So configure the profile like it costs you money, because now it does:

  • Set your service area to where your techs actually drive. Target cities as the primary unit, not a patchwork of ZIP codes. Cut every town your guys complain about.
  • Check only the job types you actually perform. The classic appliance repair mistake is leaving “small appliance repair” checked. Unless you genuinely want to drive across town for a toaster, uncheck it and keep the big four: refrigerators, washers and dryers, ovens and ranges. For HVAC, uncheck commercial if you do not do commercial.
  • Set hours you actually staff. If your profile claims 24-hour emergency service and nobody picks up at 9 p.m., you are paying for missed calls and taking a ranking hit at the same time.

Manual lead disputes are gone

Google no longer offers a manual dispute workflow. There is no dispute button. No agency, software, or consultant can dispute a lead for you, because the feature does not exist. Any article, coaching video, or sales pitch still telling you to “dispute bad leads for a refund” was written before the change.

What replaced it is automatic. Google’s models issue credits on their own when a charged lead is later judged to be low quality, usually posting within about 30 days of the original charge. The action in your dashboard is Rate this lead, and it is worth doing on every charged lead, but understand what it is: it trains the model on what a qualified customer looks like for your business. It does not trigger a credit on that specific lead.

To confirm you are being credited at all, open Billing and Transactions in your Local Services Ads account and look for credit line items. If you are getting a steady stream of junk and you see zero credits across several weeks, that is not normal. Open a case with Google Support and request a manual account review.

Google’s model processes credits faster than any human ever processed disputes. What it will never do is tell you that your service radius is set 20 miles wider than your techs will actually drive. Software makes the refund side automatic. Judgment is what keeps you from needing refunds in the first place.

How to Stay Google Verified After You Earn It

Getting verified is a project. Staying verified is a habit. Verified accounts go dark all the time, usually with no phone call and no obvious alert, and the owner does not notice until a slow week turns into a slow month.

These are the four things that pull the badge:

The annual background check lapses. This is the most common one by a wide margin. The renewal notice lands in an inbox nobody watches, the window closes, and the profile stops serving. The day you pass your first check, put the renewal date on your calendar with a 60-day warning and a 30-day warning.

Insurance or a license expires. Same silent failure. Track every expiration date in one place and start chasing renewals 90 days out.

Your Business Profile stops matching. Change your phone number, move your shop, or adjust your hours on one profile and not the other, and you can trigger re-verification or a suspension without warning.

The Business Profile link breaks. Two failure modes account for most of it. Google auto-associates your Local Services Ads account with the wrong business listing, so your listing shows somebody else’s reviews. Or a second Local Services Ads account gets created against the same Business Profile, which is a known bug that stops both accounts from serving with no alert at all.

Run one check a month. Search your service in an incognito window, find your listing, and confirm two things: the blue checkmark is showing and the reviews on the listing are yours. It takes two minutes and it catches every one of the failures above.

What the Badge Does and Does Not Do for Your Lead Volume

Getting verified gets you into the pool. It does not put you at the top of it.

Google shows a small handful of profiles above the fold, and placement comes down to your bid, your responsiveness, how well your profile matches the search, your contact options, your profile quality, and your review profile. Verification is one input among several, and it is the one everybody else in your market also has.

Here are the benchmarks we hold accounts to once they are live:

Metric Target
Booking conversion ratio (leads booked / leads charged) 85% or higher
Message lead response time during business hours Under 5 minutes
Missed call rate on lead calls Under 10%
Average star rating 4.5 or higher, 4.8+ in competitive metros
Review velocity 3 to 5 fresh reviews per month
Absolute top impression share 60% or higher

Notice that three of those six are about answering the phone. The badge earns you the click. What happens in the next fifteen seconds earns you the job. An owner with the checkmark and a voicemail greeting will lose to a competitor without it who picks up on the second ring.

Reviews deserve their own note. Google does not publish a review minimum to pass verification in home services categories, and plenty of newer shops get verified with a thin profile. But review count, rating, and recency all feed your placement afterward, so a steady trickle of fresh reviews matters more than a big pile from 2023. If you are starting from a light review base, build that alongside your application instead of after it.

Is Getting Google Verified Worth It for Your Shop?

For most licensed, insured appliance repair and HVAC companies, yes. Pay-per-lead placement above every other result, with a trust badge attached, is hard to beat on intent. Nobody browses Local Services Ads. They call.

But it is genuinely not for everyone right now. Wait or fix these first if any of them describe you:

  • Nobody reliably answers the phone. If more than one call in ten rolls to voicemail, you will pay for leads you never talk to, and your placement will slide. Fix the phone first. It is cheaper than the leads.
  • Your license or insurance is lapsed or in transition. Get the paperwork current before you apply. Rejected applications cost you weeks.
  • You cannot define your service area honestly. If your answer to “where do you go” is “wherever the work is,” the no-credit rule on out-of-area leads will bill you every week.
  • Your Google Business Profile is a mess. The two are linked. A neglected profile drags both channels down at once. Start with local SEO and come back.

I am not going to tell you what your lead volume will be or how fast you will get approved, because nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that most of the owners who never got verified did not fail the screening. They stalled on an address mismatch, or an email nobody opened, or a background check they wrongly believed had to cover the whole crew. Every one of those is avoidable.

After working with an SEO company that specializes in appliance repair, I can honestly say the difference was noticeable. Instead of using a one size fits all approach, they understood exactly how customers search for appliance repair services and what it takes to rank well in local search results. What impressed me most was their knowledge of the industry. They knew how to optimize service pages, target the right keywords, and focus on generating actual leads rather than just increasing website traffic. As a result, I started seeing more qualified calls and inquiries from people who were actively looking for appliance repair services. If you're an appliance repair business owner looking for SEO help, I highly recommend choosing a company that specializes in this industry. Their expertise saves time, avoids a lot of trial and error, and delivers much better results than a general marketing agency. I'm very happy with my experience and the growth it's helped create for my business. Thanks Mike!
