Why Worse Businesses Outrank You

Why Worse Businesses Outrank You

You run a solid appliance repair company. Your technicians know what they’re doing. Your customers leave happy. You fix problems the first time and back your work with a warranty.

But when someone in your city searches “appliance repair near me,” three other companies show up in the Google Map Pack above you. You click through to their websites and you’re confused. Their reviews are mediocre. Their websites look like they were built in 2015. Some of them have been in business for less time than you have.

So why are they getting the calls while your phone stays quiet?

The short answer is that Google doesn’t rank based on who deserves it. Google ranks based on signals, and many appliance repair owners don’t realize which signals matter most. This guide will show you exactly why worse businesses outrank you and what you can actually do about it.

Why Worse Businesses Outrank You: The Ranking Problem Most Appliance Repair Owners Miss

Most business owners assume that if they do good work and get decent reviews, Google will reward them with visibility. That’s not how it works.

Google’s algorithm looks at specific technical factors. It doesn’t care about your warranty policy, how fast you show up, or how experienced your team is. It cares about structured data, review velocity, keyword placement, website speed, backlink profiles, and dozens of other ranking signals that have nothing to do with the quality of your actual service.

Your competitor might be worse at fixing refrigerators, but if their Google Business Profile is optimized correctly and yours isn’t, they win. If they’re running a targeted Google Ads campaign with the right keywords and you’re relying solely on organic reach, they win. If they respond to reviews within 24 hours and you respond once a month, they win.

The game is technical, and most appliance repair owners don’t realize they’re playing it wrong.

Google Maps ranking factors chart showing the importance of review velocity

Google Business Profile Problems That Kill Your Rankings

Example of a fully optimized Google Business Profile for appliance repair.

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important asset for local visibility. If it’s incomplete, inconsistent, or outdated, you will lose to competitors who treat it like a real marketing channel.

Your Primary Category Is Wrong

Google lets you choose one primary category and several secondary categories. Many appliance repair companies choose something generic like “Repair Service” or list too many unrelated categories like “Handyman” or “HVAC Contractor.”

Your primary category must be Appliance Repair Service. That’s it. If you also do HVAC or plumbing, those can be secondary categories, but your core identity on Google must match what customers are actually searching for.

If your competitor has the correct primary category and you don’t, they will rank higher than you even if your business is objectively better.

Your Service Areas Are Missing or Too Broad

Google prioritizes proximity. If someone searches “appliance repair” from their kitchen, Google shows the businesses physically closest to them or the businesses with verified service areas covering that location.

Many business owners either don’t define service areas at all, or they try to list 40 cities hoping to rank everywhere. Both strategies fail.

You need to define realistic, specific service areas and then create individual landing pages on your website for each major city or zip code you serve. Those pages need to include localized content, not just templated junk with the city name swapped in.

Your worse-ranking competitor probably defined their service areas correctly while you left yours blank or vague.

You’re Not Getting Fresh Reviews Consistently

Google weighs review recency more than total review count. If you have 150 reviews from three years ago and your competitor has 40 reviews from the last six months, your competitor will often rank higher.

This is called review velocity. It signals that your business is active, trusted, and currently serving customers. A high total review count from years ago signals that you used to be good but may not be anymore.

If you’re not asking for reviews after every completed job, you’re losing rankings every single week.

Your Photos Are Generic or Missing

Google Business Profiles with regular photo uploads rank higher than profiles with no photos or old stock images. The algorithm sees fresh photos as a sign of an active, legitimate business.

Take photos of your team, your trucks, completed jobs, and your service area. Upload at least one new photo every week. It doesn’t have to be professional. It just has to be real and recent.

Your worse competitor is probably uploading photos consistently while your profile sits stagnant.

Why Your Website Isn’t Helping You Rank

Your website might look fine to you, but Google doesn’t care how it looks. Google cares about technical structure, load speed, mobile usability, and whether the content matches search intent.

Your Homepage Doesn’t Target Local Keywords

Many appliance repair websites have a homepage with vague language like “Quality Service You Can Trust” or “Expert Appliance Repair.” Those phrases don’t help you rank.

Your homepage H1 heading should include your primary service and your city. Example: Appliance Repair in Dallas – Fast, Reliable Service

Your page title, meta description, and first paragraph should also include your location and core services. If Google crawls your homepage and can’t immediately tell what you do or where you do it, you won’t rank locally.

Your worse competitor probably has clear local keywords on their homepage while yours is full of vague marketing language.

You Don’t Have Individual Service Pages

If you repair refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and ovens, you need a separate service page for each appliance type. Each page should explain common problems, typical repair costs, brands you service, and why repair is often better than replacement.

These pages accomplish two things. First, they help you rank for specific long-tail searches like “refrigerator repair near me” or “washer not spinning repair.” Second, they give potential customers the information they need to book a service call instead of shopping around.

Many appliance repair websites have one generic “Services” page that lists everything in a paragraph. That page won’t rank for anything specific, and it won’t convert visitors into calls.

Your worse competitor probably has individual service pages while you’re trying to rank one page for everything.

Your Website Is Slow or Broken on Mobile

Google prioritizes mobile-first indexing. If your website takes more than three seconds to load on a phone, or if buttons don’t work correctly on mobile, you will rank lower than competitors with faster, mobile-friendly sites.

Run your website through Google PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile score is below 70, you have a problem. Common issues include oversized images, too many plugins, and poorly coded themes.

Your worse competitor might have a simpler, faster website that ranks higher simply because it loads quickly and works on mobile.

Google Ads Mistakes That Waste Your Budget

Many appliance repair companies try Google Ads and quit after a few months because they didn’t get enough calls to justify the cost. The problem is almost never that Google Ads doesn’t work. The problem is that the campaign was set up wrong.

You’re Using Broad Match Keywords

Broad match keywords trigger your ads for searches that are loosely related to your target keyword. If you bid on “appliance repair,” your ad might show for searches like “appliance parts,” “DIY appliance troubleshooting,” or “appliance repair school.”

You pay for clicks from people who have no intention of hiring you. Your cost per lead goes up, your conversion rate goes down, and you conclude that Google Ads doesn’t work.

Your worse competitor is probably using exact match and phrase match keywords like “refrigerator repair near me” and “washer repair service.” They’re paying less per click and getting higher-quality leads.

Your Ad Copy Doesn’t Match Search Intent

If someone searches “emergency appliance repair,” they want fast service. Your ad should say “Same-Day Appliance Repair” or “24/7 Emergency Service.”

If someone searches “refrigerator not cooling,” they want a diagnosis. Your ad should say “Fast Refrigerator Repair – We Fix Cooling Issues.”

Many appliance repair companies use generic ad copy like “Trusted Appliance Repair Since 1995.” That’s fine for brand awareness, but it doesn’t match high-intent searches. Your worse competitor is probably writing ad copy that directly addresses the searcher’s problem.

You’re Sending Traffic to Your Homepage

Your Google Ads should send traffic to a dedicated landing page, not your homepage. A landing page is built specifically for conversions. It has one clear message, one call to action, and no distractions.

Your homepage has navigation menus, blog links, service area lists, and a bunch of other content that dilutes the conversion path. Visitors click around, get confused, and leave without calling.

Your worse competitor is probably sending ad traffic to a simple landing page with a headline, three bullet points, and a phone number. That page converts better than your homepage, so they get more leads from the same ad spend.

You Don’t Have Call Tracking

If you’re running Google Ads without call tracking, you have no idea which keywords, ads, or campaigns are generating actual service calls. You’re guessing based on clicks and form fills, but most appliance repair leads come through phone calls.

Call tracking assigns a unique phone number to each campaign or keyword so you can see exactly where your calls are coming from. You can also listen to recorded calls to understand lead quality.

Your worse competitor is probably using call tracking to optimize their campaigns while you’re flying blind.

Why Review Velocity Beats Total Review Count

Google wants to show businesses that are currently active and trusted. A business with 200 reviews from 2019 to 2021 and nothing since looks abandoned or inconsistent. A business with 50 reviews spread evenly over the last 12 months looks active and reliable.

This is why worse businesses can outrank you even if you have more total reviews. They’re generating fresh reviews consistently, and you’re not.

How to Build Review Velocity Without Being Annoying

The best time to ask for a review is immediately after you finish the job, while you’re still standing in the customer’s kitchen. Say something like:

“If you’re happy with the work today, I’d really appreciate it if you could leave us a quick review on Google. It helps us a lot and only takes a minute. I can text you a link right now if that’s easier.”

Then send a direct link to your Google Business Profile review page via text message. Make it as easy as possible. Most customers will do it right then if the experience was good.

If they don’t leave a review immediately, send a follow-up text the next day with the link and a short reminder. That’s it. Don’t send three emails over two weeks. Don’t call them. One in-person ask and one follow-up text is enough.

Do this after every job, and you’ll build consistent review velocity. Your worse competitor is probably already doing this while you’re waiting for reviews to come in naturally.

Respond to Every Review Within 24 Hours

Google tracks response time and response rate. Businesses that respond quickly to all reviews rank higher than businesses that ignore reviews or respond weeks later.

Your response doesn’t have to be long. For positive reviews, say thank you and mention the specific service you provided. For negative reviews, acknowledge the issue, apologize if appropriate, and offer to make it right offline.

Never argue with a bad review publicly. It makes you look defensive and unprofessional. Just respond calmly, offer a solution, and move the conversation offline.

Your worse competitor is probably responding to reviews quickly while you let them pile up unanswered.

NAP Consistency Across the Web

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google checks to see if your business information is consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Yelp, industry directories, and any other place your business is listed online.

If your phone number on your website than it is the same as your Google Business Profile, Google sees that as a trust issue. If your address is listed as “123 Main St” in one place and “123 Main Street” in another place, Google sees an inconsistency.

Inconsistent NAP data confuses Google and lowers your rankings. Your worst competitor probably has clean, consistent NAP data while yours is a mess.

Go through every online listing for your business and make sure your name, address, and phone number are exactly the same across all listings. Use the same format, punctuation, and abbreviations across all platforms.

Backlinks are links from other websites to your website. Google sees backlinks as votes of trust. The more high-quality, relevant backlinks you have, the higher you rank.

Most appliance repair companies have zero backlinks. Your worst competitor might have 10 or 15 backlinks from local business directories, chamber of commerce pages, or blog posts on local news sites. That’s often enough to outrank you.

You don’t need hundreds of backlinks. You need a handful of legitimate, local backlinks from trusted sources. Examples include:

Your local chamber of commerce

Local business directories, like your city’s official directory or regional trade groups

Guest posts or features on local blogs or news sites

Sponsorships or partnerships with local charities or events

If you’ve been in business for years and you still have zero backlinks, that’s a ranking problem. Start with the easy ones like your chamber of commerce and local business directories. Then look for partnership or sponsorship opportunities that come with a link on their website.

Your worst competitor is probably listed in local directories and community pages, while you’re not.

Stop Guessing and Start Tracking

The biggest difference between businesses that consistently rank well and businesses that don’t is tracking. High-ranking businesses know exactly where their leads come from, which campaigns work, and which keywords drive service calls.

If you’re not tracking your marketing, you’re guessing. You’ll spend money on things that don’t work and ignore things that do. You’ll blame Google or the economy when the real problem is that you’re not measuring results correctly.

You need to track:

Where every service call came from (Google Ads, organic search, referral, direct)

Which keywords triggered the call

How much did you spend to get that call

Whether the call turned into a booked job

Your average ticket size and lifetime customer value

Once you have this data, you can make smart decisions about where to invest your marketing budget. You’ll stop wasting money on tactics that don’t work and double down on tactics that do.

Your worst competitor is probably tracking everything while you’re flying blind.

AMP Up Your Growth With Proven Systems

You didn’t get into the appliance repair business to become a marketing expert. You got into it because you’re good at fixing appliances and you saw an opportunity to build something.

But the reality is that good service alone doesn’t guarantee visibility. You need optimized systems for local SEO, Google Ads, review generation, and lead tracking. That’s what AMPRank was built for.

AMPRank is our proprietary system that combines Google Business Profile optimization, search-focused Google Ads, AI-powered visibility tools, and real-time tracking into a single, predictable lead-generation engine.
